LARRY SHROYER |
The 72nd annual Logan County Sheep Improvement Association annual banquet was hosted Thursday at the Rushsylvania Church of Christ.
Some 130 attendees learned Logan County is one of the few counties in the state continuing to celebrate the sheep industry with a banquet that featured leg of lamb and lamb meatballs — along with chicken and noodles.
Long-time sheep producer Larry Shroyer of rural DeGraff was recognized with a video montage for his recent receipt of the Charles Boyles master Shepherd Award at the 2016 Buckeye Shepherds Symposium.
He has been involved in both breeding sheep and club lamb production over the years.
“I learned to love it by doing it,” he said in the video, shared by Roger High, executive director of the Ohio Sheep Improvement Association. Mr. Shroyer also identified himself as a 63-year member of 4-H, which he joined as a nine-year-old.
“Larry Shroyer certainly fits the profile of a master shepherd,” said Susan Shultz of rural DeGraff, who serves as secretary/treasurer of the American Sheep Industry Association, who introduced the video.
The award has been given since 1987 when the late Charlie and Joan Hess of nearby Cable, who were active in the Logan County association, received the honor. Steve Myers of Rushsylvania received the award in 1988.
