Patrons at Mad River Mountain ski resort near Zanesfield likely have encountered a young man who happily cleans their tables in the dining area and other parts of the ski lodge as a member of the housekeeping staff, and also enjoys joining them on the slopes during his spare time.
They would recognize Mark Mitchell, a Logan County Board of Developmental Disabilities client, by his infectious smile that he flashes, whether at work or play, LCBDD Superintendent Saul Bauer told attendees at the agency’s annual elected officials breakfast Thursday morning.
Mr. Mitchell then walked up to the podium and flashed his famous grin while speaking about his job duties, and also his favorite pastime of skiing at Mad River Mountain with The Adaptive Adventure Sports Coalition.
“I love being part of the housekeeping staff and I’m really good at cleaning. The people there make a lot of messes, so they keep me busy,” he said, eliciting laughter from the breakfast crowd.
“My job means I have a better life. I’m able to make money, and that means I have money to go skiing. Skiing is very relaxing for me.”
In a video shown during the Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month kickoff event at the agency’s 1851 W. State Route 47 board office, Mr. Mitchell’s supervisors at the ski resort offered positive remarks about his work ethic. They noted that “he’s fun to be around and he doesn’t need a lot of guidance” and “he brings a lot of energy to this place anytime he’s here.”
Superintendent Bauer related that these meaningful experiences for Mr. Mitchell and other agency clients have been made possible through groundbreaking efforts by many individuals in the 50-year history of Ohio’s County Boards of Developmental Disabilities. The agencies across the state are celebrating the milestone anniversary this year with the theme “Side By Side.”
