Warren Shockey delivered a perfect game for Riverside’s baseball team Wednesday in an 11-0 win in five innings over host Waynesfield-Goshen.
In the process the Pirates claimed the outright Northwest Central Conference championship.
The Pirates improve their record to 13-9 on the season and win the NWCC at 6-0.
“It’s fantastic for these kids,” said Riverside head coach Todd Guthrie. “It’s been eight years since we won a baseball league championship. We’re thrilled to death and I’m glad for the seniors. We used our athletic ability and our pitching has been outstanding.”
A sophomore, Shockey struck out every batter he faced, which tallied 15 strikeouts and no walks. The Pirate defense was also steller in not allowing an error.
“That was amazing,” said Guthrie. “He’s rattled off six or seven straight wins on the mound. It was impressive. I was planning to work in some young guys and get them time on the mound, but when you got a kid like him striking everyone out it’s hard to pull him off the mound.”
After two scoreless innings, Riverside’s offense exploded with eight runs in the third inning. The Pirates added two runs in the fourth inning and one more run in the fifth inning.
Offensively for the Pirates, Simon Godwin went 2-3 with a double and an RBI, Zane Rose hit a double with two RBI, Zander Crouch had two RBI, while Shockey, Kale Long and Kaleb Schindewolf each had one RBI.
Riverside travels to Hardin Northern on Saturday.
