Indian Lake Middle School honored its outstanding students before heading into summer break during a recent ceremony, where pupils were recognized for perfect attendance, service club involvement, art, music, academic club involvement and more.
Special awards were handed out to eighth-graders to honor their achievements at the middle school. Clay Jacobs and Kassidy Crockett were the recipients of the Outstanding Leadership Award demonstrating high leadership, scholarship and citizenship.
Matthew Risner and Kaylee Shelton were presented with the Archie Griffin Award recognizing students who display exemplary sportsmanship in their school and community.
The final award of the program was the Blake Smith Award, named after an ILMS student who passed away from leukemia in 1996 at the age of 13. Principals, teachers and the guidance counselor chose eighth-grader Nathan Reichert as the student who best demonstrates exemplary leadership, scholarship, citizenship and high athletic ability. Nathan received a plaque and his name will be engraved on the Blake Smith Award on display in the trophy case in the ILMS cafeteria.
In addition, nearly every instructor in the building selected student from all grade levels for the Laker Pride Awards. This could be either the most improved student or a student who excelled all year in a class. A complete list of all the ILMS Award winners at http://ms.ils-k12.org.
Benjamin Logan students participate in State Science Day
Benjamin Logan High School students Jessica Goff and Sarah Seeley were among more than 1,100 pupils in grades 5-12 who exhibited their research projects at the 68th annual State Science Day hosted by The Ohio State University during May.
Sarah received a superior award for her project, “Which agricultural method is most efficient: Aeroponics, aquaponics or traditional?”
Jessica received an excellent rating for her project, “Antibacterial Medieval Remedy.”
The STEM scholars from more than 315 schools throughout Ohio competed for more than $1 million in scholarships and awards at the The Ohio Academy of Science program. Participants had advanced to the state-level competition from 17 District Science Days in March.
Since 1949, local, district and State Science Days have comprised Ohio’s largest and most far-reaching STEM education program. In 67 years, more than 65,000 students have participated in the annual event.
ILMS student wins AAUW camp scholarship
ROBINSON |
Indian Lake Middle School student Macie Robinson is the recipient of this year’s Logan County Branch of the American Association of University Women scholarship to attend a science camp this summer.
Macie will attend the “Be Wise” Camp at Denison University in mid-June. The camp will focus on girls in engineering, math and other areas of science. She was selected during an intense application process this spring.
A daughter of Matt and Anna Robinson of rural Bellefontaine, Macie said her sixth-grade teacher, Chris Anders, got her interested in applying for the scholarship.
“I’m excited. I want to be a vet or something in the medical field because I want to help people,” she said.
