Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department took a recent report regarding bogus Dayton Power & Light Co. disconnection calls.
The scammer is able to disguise his phone number as coming from DP&L and tells customers they are behind on paying bills and will lose service if they don’t pay immediately.
One city resident reported missing the first call but called the number back soon after the initial try. She was connected direct to a male with a foreign accent.
He told her she owed $300 and demanded her name, address, date of birth, Social Security number and checking account information. She did not comply with his demands.
She waited five minutes and called DP&L. This time her call was directed to an automated message tree which she followed to speak with a bonafide DP&L representative.
The respresentative said the utility company had received numerous similar complaints.
