Russia pitcher Jonah Counts frustrated Riverside on Wednesday as the host Raiders eliminated the Pirates from the Division IV sectional baseball tournament with an 8-2 win.
The fifth-seeded Raiders used the pitching of Counts and a big fourth inning to knock off the fourth seed and state-ranked Pirates in a tourney opener.
The Pirates were ranked third in the latest Division IV state poll. They finish their season at 20-8.
“Russia played very well defensively and put the ball in play,” said RHS head coach Derrick Purtee. “They are a well-coached team. We knew we would have to play well to have a chance to win. They have a track record of being a team that plays its best baseball around tournament time and that showed.”
