Faces charges for failing to register as a sex offender
A rural Bellefontaine man was taken into custody this morning by the U.S. Marshals Service, with assistance by deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, related to allegations that he failed to register as a sex offender after moving to the area from California this year.
Christopher Tobie, 48, was arrested about 5:15 a.m. today at his residence, 15564 County Road 10, Bellefontaine. He reportedly was transported to Columbus and is scheduled for a bond hearing today, Logan County Sheriff Randall J. Dodds said.
A former Los Angeles resident, the defendant was convicted of possession of child pornography Nov. 23, 2009, by the Central District of California.
He was required to register annually as a sex offender, and had last registered March 10, 2016, in San Pedro, Calif.
Earlier this year, Tobie purchased the Logan County property Jan. 25, and also obtained an Ohio driver’s license Jan. 24, the sheriff reported. The defendant reportedly had been working for Honda of America Mfg.
Deputies learned about the defendant living and working in the area, and collaborated with state and federal authorities to gather information for the investigation that culminated with today’s arrest, Sheriff Dodds related.
