Robert “Bob” F. Gilbert, 79, of Kenton, passed away with his loving family by his side at 6:46 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2016.
He was born Nov. 3, 1936, in Kenton, the son of the late William and Helen Phalen Gilbert. He was married to Shelba Spencer and she survives.
Also surviving are his children, Darren Gilbert and Deborah (John) McEntee, both of Kenton; grandchildren, Shelsa (Ryan) Smith of Milford Center and Johnna McEntee (Zac King) of Lewis Center; great-grandchildren, Ianna Smith and Kelby Smith; and several nieces and nephews.
He also was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Ann Shafer.
He was a graduate of Kenton High School class of 1954 and was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving during the Korean War.
He was retired from Golden Giant Building Systems where he worked many years with the company as a building salesman. He was a partner in the ownership of South Side Six in Dunkirk.
An active Mason, he was a current member of Kenton Latham Masonic Lodge 154, Hardin County Shrine Club, York Rite Freemasonry and Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo. He was a 32nd degree member of the Kenton Latham Chapter Order of Eastern Star 364 and was a member of the Aladdin Shrine of Columbus where he was the recipient of the Ambassador Award. He also was a member of Kenton Elks Lodge 157.
For several years he chaired the annual Hardin County Stag Picnic and loved every minute of it and the friends with whom he served.
He was an avid sports fan and loved the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Cavaliers. His feelings were more of love/hate relationship with the Cleveland Browns he would tell you. Bob enjoyed all Ohio State University sports teams, although he would lead people to believe he was a Michigan fan just to get a reaction from them. He enjoyed starting the day each morning at the breakfast table with his friends. Bob had his final wishes followed to the end as he was an organ and tissue donor allowing others to live on through his donation.
Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Schindewolf Stout Crates Funeral Home, Kenton, where a Latham Masonic Lodge service begins at 7 p.m.
A graveside memorial service is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Fairview McDonald Cemetery with Pastor Gregg King officiating. The Kenton AMVETS Post 1994 Honor Guard conducts military services.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations in Bob’s memory be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45229.
