Robert Eugene Byler, M.D., 85, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 10, 2018, at home at Fahrney-Keedy Senior Living Community in Boonsboro, Md.
He was born Jan. 18, 1933, in West Liberty and moved to Hagerstown in 1958. He attended Hagerstown Community College before pursuing and receiving his medical degree from George Washington University. He completed his residency in psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. He practiced in Hagerstown, at Brooklane Psychiatric Center and in private practice.
Robert met Lora Sudermann while they were both working at Brooklane and they were married June 20, 1959, in Yarrow, British Columbia, Canada.
He was preceded in death by one son, James G. Byler; foster parents, Chauncey and Nellie Kauffman of West Liberty; four brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lora; two daughters, Patricia L. Byler and her long-time partner, David S. Van Zandt of Grafton, Mass.; Teresa M. Koon and her husband, Jeffrey J. Koon, of Charleston, W.Va.; brothers, Elmore (Cheryl) Byler, and Ellsworth (Evelyn) Byler.
Robert had many interests and talents, but his passion in later years was playing his viola da gamba and other early music instruments with the Washington County Museum Consort.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
