Riverside’s girls basketball team pulled away from host Northeastern in the second half for a 42-26 win Saturday in a non-league season opener.
The Pirates led 25-18 at halftime, but outscored the Jets 17-8 over the final two quarters.
“I’m proud of the girls for starting the year with a win,” said RHS head coach Bryce Hodge. “However, we talked about not being satisfied because we played extremely sloppy at times, specifically with turnovers.
“Thankfully, Lauryn Sanford was on tonight and knocked down some big shots for us. As always, though, I’m pleased with my team’s effort. I’m glad we got the win, but we have a lot of things to clean up before our next game.”
Riverside took an 11-8 lead after the opening quarter and outscored Northeastern 14-10 in the second quarter. That put the Pirates out to a 25-18 halftime lead.
The second half saw the Pirates continue to dominate. They outscored the Jets 10-6 in the third quarter for a 35-24 cushion. Riverside wrapped up the game with a 7-2 run in the final quarter.
Lauryn Sanford sparked the Pirates with a game-high 23 points, including five three-pointers, with eight steals. Olivia Perk added four points and eight rebounds and Amber Waters also had four points with six rebounds.
Northeastern topped Riverside in the junior varsity game 28-15. Rachel Knight paced the Pirates with six points and Anastasia Gonzalez had four points.
Riverside is back on the court Tuesday at home against Hardin Northern.
