Richard P. “Dick” Hayes, 85, of West Liberty and formerly of Lakeview, passed away early Wednesday morning, Nov. 16, 2016, at Mary Rutan Hospital, Bellefontaine.
Dick was born on June 18, 1931, in Huntsville, to the late H. Gerald “Peck” and E. Dephyne Bradley Hayes. He had one brother, Robert Hayes. On Nov. 11, 1980, he married Alice P. Dickerson Grumbling and she preceded him in death on Nov. 3, 2013. He was also preceded in death by two stepsons, Ronald and Richard Grumbling.
Dick is survived by two stepdaughters, Beth Tweed of Lancaster, Calif., and Ruth Skrletts of Marietta, Ga.; two step-sons, Raymond D. “Dan” Grumbling Jr. of Powell and Robert D. (Brenda) Grumbling Sr. of Russells Point; 17 grandchildren; and 41 great-grandchildren.
Dick retired from the United States Army with the rank of Sergeant after 20 years of service. He retired as Director at the Department of Human Services office in Bellefontaine in 1991.
He was a member of Grace Chapel Christian Union in Santa Fe and was also a member of Doyle R. Miller Amvet Post 39, Indian Lake Moose Lodge 1533, Indian Lake Eagles Aeries 3615, all of Lakeview, and Bellefontaine VFW Post 1080.
He enjoyed golfing, gardening and yard work, joking around with his family and their annual fall chili cookouts. Most recently, he volunteered at Green Hills Care Center in West Liberty.
Pastor Scott Anderson will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, at Shoffstall Funeral Home, 205 S. Main St., Lakeview, where visitation is 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20. Burial is in Dayton National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in Dick’s name to Green Hills Care Center, 6557 S. U.S. Route 68, West Liberty, OH 43357.
