Matthew L. Mewhorter, 36, of 300 N. Detroit St., Apt. C, was charged Tuesday with assault and theft.
Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department met with Dallas McKinley around 8:45 p.m. outside 117 W. Brown Ave. He told officers Mewhorter attacked him when McKinley took the suspect inside to prove he had not taken the defendant’s knife.
Once inside, Mewhorter allegedly began hitting McKinley who sustained an injury to his right ear. A Bellefontaine squad was called to the scene to evaluate McKinley’s injuries.
Mewhorter fled the room, taking McKinley’s keys with him.
The defendant was found at his residence, taken into custody and lodged in the Logan County Jail.
Man charged in firearm discharge
Austin L. Downing, 22, of 500 Gunntown Road, Apt. F11, was charged Saturday with discharging a firearm in an occupied structure on Saturday.
He called officers around 7:10 p.m. to report he unintentionally fired his .40-caliber handgun while removing the magazine. A single bullet was discharged into a ceiling under a roofed part of the apartment.
Downing locked the slide open on the gun and placed it unloaded and separate from the magazine before calling police.
The gun was taken as evidence.
A report will be forwarded to Logan County Children’s Services as there were children in the unkempt apartment.
Teen lodged for damaging water fountain
A 13-year-old Bellefontaine boy was lodged in the Central Ohio Youth Center in Marysville after he was observed kicking and damaging a water fountain outside a restroom facility at Mary Rutan Park around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday.
Parks Superintendent Kris Myers observed two boys walking past the building when the defendant kicked the water fountain.
The boy remained in the park and was confronted by officers about the damage. He claimed he did not kick it, but merely put his foot on it to check his shoe.
He was charged with delinquency criminal damaging.
ATV stolen from shed
James Wilson, 501 Kennedy St., reported Tuesday a 2003 Yamaha Raptor 660 was stolen from a storage shed on his property. The four-wheeled, all-terrain vehicle is black and red and valued at $2,500.
Injured man faces intoxication charge
Virgil A. Hinkle, 59, of 312 N. Detroit St., was charged Saturday with public intoxication and criminal damaging.
At 4:40 p.m., he was found laying in a flower bed at 308 N. Detroit St. He apparently had dislodged a railing that was bolted to the steps leading to the residence.
Hinkle had injuries to his elbows, arms, knees and face and a Bellefontaine squad was called to the scene.
He was transported to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment. Hospital staff determined his blood alcohol level was 0.25.
