The 2021 Logan County Relay For Life concluded Friday night with a successful introduction to the downtown area, with area residents offering their support by walking laps around the Logan County Courthouse that was lined by luminaria in honor and in memory of individuals battling cancer.
“It was a great night and we loved being downtown,” one of the organizers, Steve Moore said. “It was really nice to see all the people come out and support us.”
Event totals will be determined Wednesday night, which is “bank night” for the Relay teams to turn in their funds, Moore said.
However, part of the opening ceremonies included a special presentation by Benjamin Logan Schools staff, who provided a check in the amount of $43,900 to the American Cancer Society, the largest donation that the school district has raised to date in its generous tradition of supporting the cause.
This year’s donation brings the district’s total contributions to Relay For Life to more than $393,000 for the past 18 years. The year with the second-highest contribution was $40,000 in 2014.
Ben Logan middle school and high school students and staff collaboratively raised funds to help the fight against cancer during their mini Relay events this spring.
Many staff and students achieved the honor of being called “A $100 Donor,” with 149 middle school students achieving this fundraising milestone and 32 high school staff and students reaching this mark, school officials previously reported.
Other fundraising efforts at Benjamin Logan High School included Improvise a Cure, raising $2,300 and a T-shirt sale which raised another $2,300.
