It is not because of their political activism that administrators at West Liberty-Salem intend to reprimand students that participate in today’s planned national student walkout over gun violence in schools.
It’s because that leaving class in the middle of an instructional period and going outside is not permitted in the first place, Superintendent Kraig Hissong said Tuesday following a special school board meeting.
“It is a violation of school policy to leave class and go outside during the school day without permission, and students that take part are subject to consequences for breaking that rule,” Mr. Hissong said. “These students will have left class without permission from the school, or their teachers and left the building during the school day.”
With that position, WL-S district leaders seek to establish precedent in how best to handle future planned demonstrations on campus.
