PLAIN CITY — A Plain City man sustained non-life threatening injuries when the World War I-style plane he was piloting crashed Sunday evening along County Road 33 in Jerome Township.
Todd Stanton, 53, was operating a Fokker Dr.I when the engine failed about 6:40 p.m. causing the plane to crash shortly after takeoff, troopers of the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol report.
The red Fokker Dr.I flown by Mr. Stanton is the same type of single-engine craft flown by WWI ace “Red Baron” Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen, according to various online sources.
The pilot was taken by Jerome Township EMS to Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
Troopers were also assisted by Union County Sheriff’s deputies, Jerome Township Fire Department and Pleasant Township Fire and EMS.
The Federal Aviation Administration was notified.
Alcohol is not suspected as a factor.
The crash remains under investigation.
