A bevy of improvements are being planned for Bellefontaine’s parks at the conclusion of the summer season, which got off to a good start this year, Superintendent Kris Myers told the Bellefontaine Joint Recreation District Board of Trustees on Tuesday evening.
“Everything is going real smooth,” he said as he knocked on the wooden table. “We had a great start to the pool season — 80 degrees on Memorial Day weekend had me doing cartwheels, and the staffing situation is excellent.
“Financially we are very tight because we are operating at the same level as the past 12 years, but I do feel really good going into the season.”
The district was dealt an unexpected expense after a light pole at Ratleff Park fell during a windstorm, but it may get a boost from an improvement project being planned and paid for by the Bellefontaine Athletic Boosters, Mr. Myers told the board.
The damage from the lighting pole falling will require spending $5,400 to repair, bury electric lines and improve the breaker system for the shelter houses at Ratleff, the superintendent said.
On the flip side, the Bellefontaine High School’s boosters have asked for permission to improve the concession stands at Blue Jacket Park and in the process would build a new easier-to-use storage shed for the parks department staff, Mr. Myers said.
