After enjoying a supper provided by culinary arts pupils, the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center Board of Education started their regular monthly meeting by hearing from two students in the healthcare program.
Leyla Johnson and Addison Epling from the Health Careers Academy spoke to the board about their Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO), specifically related to their involvement in the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA).
Most recently, the students partnered with satellite programs in Kenton and Marysville to present a joint HOSA leadership conference. It took place Sept. 30 at the Marysville Early College High School, where one of their allied satellite nursing programs is located.
“During the conference, they did team-building exercises and leadership activities,” Kelsey Webb, OHP PR and marketing coordinator, said. “And they collectively planned a 5K walk/run for the Spring.”
The Hi-Point Hustle Walk/Run 5K has been scheduled for May 6, 2023. All proceeds will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Members also detailed the ribbon-cutting ceremony that will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, to introduce the school’s new building, which was finished in August, to the community.
Superintendent Dr. Rick Smith and BOE President Anne Reames also both spoke about the success of their professional development day on Friday, Oct. 21.
Smith called it a “really positive day” and noted it led to more businesses wanting to take on OHP students as interns. Reames said the speaker was “phenomenal and up-to-date” in knowing what students are looking for as they pursue a career that benefits their lifestyle.
The board also mentioned the great turnout they had for their fall craft fair Oct. 15.
In his treasurer report, Caleb Lang, who will replace Eric Adelsberger as treasurer when he retires, said the school is below its 89 percent spending threshold at 84 percent, but he expects that to pick up as the school year progresses.
In other action, the board:
• approved the Logan County School Employee Insurance Consortium’s public records retention policy and records retention schedule;
• adopted the OHP Joint Vocational School 125 Cafeteria Plan, which Lang stated not only complies with the law but offers additional options for staff, including creating dependent care accounts to pay for childcare;
