Volunteers continue to improve condition of nature preserve
The Myeerah Nature Preserve continues to get a little better each year, thanks to the efforts of local volunteers, Parks Superintendent Kris Myers said after the Tuesday evening meeting of the Bellefontaine Joint Parks and Recreation District board.
“The reality of the Myeerah Nature Preserve is that we wouldn’t be anywhere near where we’re at today without the work of an outstanding group of volunteers,” Myers said. “Whether its Tri-Moraine (Audubon Society) or volunteers like Brian Garver who started the work of cutting these trails or Dennis Schaub, who picked up where Brian left off, we’re really blessed to have that kind of support.”
During Tuesday’s meeting, Schaub was present and asked permission to construct three small foot bridges above various cuts along the approximately three-mile trail that forms a loop around the 450-acre nature preserve that was purchased in a partnership with the Tri-Moraine and the Trust for Public Land and opened in 2014.
A trail runner, Schaub said Logan County has a hidden gem in the Myeerah Nature Preserve and he would like it to remain a little secret.
“Alum Creek is the only place within 100 miles you can trail run,” he said. “I could have 1,000 people here if I tried, but I like it the way it is — quiet.”
