Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and several other law enforcement agencies were able to successfully locate a rural Bellefontaine teen early Tuesday morning who earlier in the evening had voiced intentions of suicide and reportedly had taken a large amount of medication.
About 11:30 p.m. Monday, deputies were dispatched to the teen’s rural Bellefontaine residence.
The teen’s mother told deputies that her son’s friend had contacted her and stated her son had taken a large amount of medication. The 16-year-old then reportedly left his residence to evade his parents and possible treatment.
Deputies searched several outbuildings and vehicles on the property. They were able to locate the teen’s phone and his electronic tablet in his room.
The sheriff’s office K9 and West Liberty Police Department officers responded to assist with locating the teen, along with Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers and a OHP helicopter to utilize thermal imaging technology. West Liberty Fire Department and Macochee EMS also assisted in the ground search.
The 16-year-old was located several hours later in the area of U.S. Route 68 south near County Road 30. He told deputies that he had taken a large number of sleeping pills because he “got very depressed” that day and then panicked when he knew that his mother had found out, so he ran from home.
He was transported to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment. A report has been forwarded to the Logan County Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office for consideration of the charges of inducing panic and disorderly conduct.
