Plans established for a national virtual candlelight vigil May 13
Officials from the Hi Point Lodge Fraternal Order of Police No. 60 reported Monday that the 50th annual Logan County Police Memorial scheduled for May 9 has been canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The representatives reported that the local event, which could potentially be rescheduled for later this year, is following suit with the cancellation of both the 2020 Ohio Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremony May 7, and the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C during May, according to recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Relating to the Ohio Peace Officers’ Memorial, the Ohio Attorney General’s website states that a private ceremony will be scheduled at a later date for the families and agencies of officers who were killed in the line of duty in 2019. In addition, those officers and their families will receive full recognition at the 2021 ceremony.
On the national level, on Wednesday, May 13, a virtual candlelight vigil is planned and the reading of names of the 2019 fallen officers “that can be watched from anywhere in the world,” according to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund website, nleomf.org.
“Then, as the future becomes more certain and the end of this crisis is near, we will begin to make plans for a live reading of names to honor our 2019 fallen officers. You have our commitment that the fallen will not be forgotten, and we will not rest until they receive the honor that they so rightfully deserve.”
