Kevin E. Conkler, 36, of Lima, was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton for injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash Saturday around 7:25 p.m.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office report he was operating a southbound motorcycle on State Route 235 north just north of Cherokee Drive when he failed to negotiate a curve and drove off the left side of the road. His motorcycle struck a utility pole, and the operator then was thrown from the vehicle.
Both the operator and the motorcycle continued into the parking lot of the Marathon gas station at 12500 N. S.R. 235.
Conkler was not wearing a helmet, deputies said.
A short time before the crash, a deputy observed Conkler’s southbound motorcycle on S.R. 235 near Lake Avenue in the Avondale area traveling at 87 mph. The deputy reportedly activated the cruiser’s overhead lights in attempt to stop the motorcycle, but could not catch up with the speeding vehicle.
The crash remains under investigation, and citations are pending.
