Mildred “Millie” Lois Engle Cushman, 99, of Zanesfield, passed away at 10:55 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, at Middleton Senior Living in Granville.
She was born in Logan County on Sept. 10, 1918, to the late William Bennett and Carrie Esther Evilsizor Engle. On Sept. 14, 1947, she married Warren Scott Cushman and he preceded her in death Nov. 25, 1980. Millie was also preceded in death by many siblings.
Millie is survived by her son, Byron Cushman of Granville; daughters, Barbara (David) Stout of Newark and L. Patricia (Bruce) Simmons of Sharon Center; grandchildren, Aimee (Bryan) Bell of Loveland, Susan (Brad) Riley of Newark, Tim (Jamie) Stout of Granville, Jennifer (Jonathan) Rodriguez of Kettering and Frank Simmons of Sharon Center; great-grandchildren, Katie, Jack, Grady and Avery Bell, Abby, Ella and Leah Riley, Maddox, Marek and Mackson Stout and Kylan and Kensington Rodriguez; and many nieces and nephews.
Millie was a retired piano and organ teacher. She also taught ceramics, was a bookkeeper for the Zanesfield Rod and Gun Club and Treasurer of the board of the Dr. Sloan Memorial Library. She was given the outstanding service plaque for lifetime work with the Zanesfield Rod & Gun Club and was the 2014 Citizen of the Year at the Logan Hills Festival in Zanesfield.
She was the founding piano and organist of the Zanesfield Community Chapel, a member of the Republican National Committee of Zanesfield and the Worthwhile Club in Zanesfield. Millie enjoyed artistic crafts, rug hooking, oil painting and singing. She was a recycler before people began recycling. Millie was an avid birdwatcher, fisherwoman and camper. She loved roses and cultivated many types. She was Zanesfield’s Girl Scout leader, piano and organ teacher, ceramics teacher and friend. Millie was beloved by all she met, especially in Zanesfield.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 2, at the Zanesfield Community Chapel, 4754 County Road 10, Zanesfield, where Pastor Keith Matthews officiates a Celebration of Life service at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3. Burial follows at the Zanesfield Cemetery.
Millie loved bright colors. It was her request that only bright colors be worn to her services.
