Melissa Jane North Notestine of Nashville, Tenn., departed this life peacefully Wednesday, May 10, 2017, after a battle with cancer.
She is survived by her loving husband, Robert J. Notestine III, whom she married April 16, 1976; two children, Trent N. Notestine and Wesley N. Notestine; sister, Nancy (Larry) Zerkle of Springfield; brother, Jack (Kay) North of Urbana; and brothers- and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews in Ohio, Tennessee, California, New York and North Carolina.
Melissa was born July 31, 1953, in Urbana, to the late Claude and Mary Jane North. She was a 1971 graduate of Graham High School and a 1975 graduate of Wright State University. She was awarded a MBA degree from Xavier University in 1981. She moved to Nashville in August 1981 with her husband to teach at Nashville State Technical College where she served as a business instructor for several years. She later served as a career counselor with Branell College, and in recent years was the CFO for her husband’s law office.
She was a wonderful, caring wife and mother. She was also a huge sports fan (she loved 104.5 sports radio), was a “foodie” and loved her second home in Pass Christian, Miss. Most of all she loved Chinese pug dogs. She had many pugs in her life and loved to rescue mistreated and abandoned pugs. She left three adoring pugs, Gracie, Lenny and Harper Lee, and a grandpug, Dixie.
Melissa was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, various dog rescue organizations and the Nashville Sports Council. She was quiet, but when she spoke, her observations and statements were wise and she was the rock of her family. She always put others before herself. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
A celebration of life service begins at 1 p.m. Monday, May 22, at the Wightman Chapel Scarritt Bennett Chapel in Nashville, Tenn., where visitation begins at noon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mid-South Pug Rescue, the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation and the American Liver Foundation in Melissa’s memory.
