Michael J. Helton, 34, of Lakeview Meadows,11900 County Road 87, lot 67, Lakeview, was charged with a felony count of domestic violence related to an incident at his home Saturday evening.
Deputies responded to the residence about 5:30 p.m. on a report of arguing at the home and a possible physical altercation taking place.
When deputies arrived at Lakeview Meadows, they observed Mr. Helton operating a vehicle traveling toward the exit of the complex and initiated a traffic stop. Deputies said the defendant was holding a 1-year-old child on his lap and there also was a 4-year-old child in the rear passenger seat. Neither of the children were secured in a child safety seat.
He told deputies he was attempting to leave the home with the children to get them away from his wife, Dawn, 29, who had been yelling and acting out of control that day.
Deputies also went inside the residence and spoke with Mrs. Helton, who had sustained a swollen and bloody bottom lip. She said her injuries had been caused by the defendant during their argument that day, relating that he had grabbed her by the shoulders and thrown her to a couch and to the floor. She said he also placed his forearm across her throat and applied pressure, preventing her from getting up.
Mr. Helton was placed under arrest and was lodged in the jail. He was issued the felony count because of a previous domestic violence conviction. A report also was sent to the Logan County Prosecutor’s Office for two additional charges of endangering children for the defendant.
Additionally, about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, deputies were called to the residence for the fifth time in 24 hours after neighbors reported Mrs. Helton was yelling at someone at the home. She was placed under arrest for persistent disorderly conduct and was lodged in the jail.
Woman lodged on drug charges
Kayleen Grago, 28, of 117 W. Williams Ave., Bellefontaine, was charged with possession of dangerous drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia related to a traffic stop Friday morning.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office on patrol in the area of south U.S. Route 68 and State Route 508 about 8:50 a.m. observed a speed violation with her vehicle and initiated the traffic stop.
During the stop, deputies said Grago appeared nervous and they also noticed that her speech was slurred. When asked, she told deputies that she did not have any illegal items in the vehicle.
K9 Thor was deployed on the vehicle for a free air sniff and the canine indicated on the passenger side. Inside the glove box, deputies located two Clonazepam pills, a schedule IV drug; several crack pipes, a marijuana pipe, marijuana grinder and other drug paraphernalia.
She also was placed under arrest and transported to the Logan County Jail. The defendant also was issued citations for speed, a seat belt violation and was issued summonses for possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.
No injuries reported in vehicle fire
Abigail C. Hartloff, 23, of Bellefontaine, did not report any injuries after her vehicle reportedly caught on fire in the 3700 block of Logan Road about 7:05 a.m. Saturday.
Deputies report she was operating a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer and pulled from a driveway in the area onto Logan Road when flames appeared on the passenger side floor of the vehicle. Damage was heavy to the sport utility vehicle.
