Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office report an 84-year-old DeGraff woman passed away as a result of injuries sustained in a fire at her residence late Sunday evening.
Catherine M. Hoffman, 84, of 219 Moore St., was transported by Riverside EMS to Mary Rutan Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The DeGraff Fire Department responded to the fire at Hoffman’s Moore Street residence. Deputies also were called to the scene about 11:15 p.m. on a report of smoke and flames showing at the home. Dispatchers were informed that an elderly woman who was hard of hearing lived at the home.
When deputies arrived on scene, they said first responders were attempting to gain access to the residence through the front of the home. A deputy went around the back of the house, where he found an unlocked door and entered the home. He found that a woman, who was later identified as Hoffman, had collapsed on the floor.
The deputy was able to carry her out of the house to the awaiting ambulance.
Also inside the home, deputies found a dog that was deceased.
At the hospital, deputies spoke with Hoffman’s granddaughter, who informed them that two other individuals lived at the home, but she found out they were away from the residence at the time of the fire.
Firefighters remained on scene through the night, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation, with the State Fire Marshal’s Office assisting.
