The Chieftain standout qualified in the 110 hurdles on Friday during the regional meet at Wayne High School after already qualifying in the long jump earlier in the week.
The top four placers in each event advanced to the state meet next weekend in Columbus.
“It’s an outstanding accomplishment in multiple events at the Division I level,” said BHS head coach Ben Davis. “Dez did an excellent job keeping his focus at a time when some seniors’ ability to multitask diminishes at graduation time.”
Lyburtus placed in third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.75. It was a whirlwind evening as the senior qualified to state then raced home to be part of commencement exercises.
“Every week Dez seems to fix one thing we’ve worked on and today it was no different,” said BHS hurdles coach Cody Sigrist.
“Our goal was to win the first hurdle and he did that. He then won the next two hurdles as well. He battled back to the front after hitting four hurdles and outraced a loaded field to qualify.”
