Kyeair N. Lampkin ,21, of La., was charged with felony counts of carrying a concealed weapon and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle related to a traffic stop Monday afternoon.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded about 3:10 p.m. to a report of a reckless vehicle complaint from an off-duty Bellefontaine Police Department officer.
The officer said the vehicle was unable to maintain its lanes and was straddling the center line of U.S. Route 33 near U.S. Route 68.
The officer said the vehicle stopped briefly at the westbound rest area along U.S. 33, and then continued along U.S. 33, exiting on State Route 117.
Deputies initiated a traffic stop with the vehicle in the area of S.R. 117 and State Route 366. Cory Kilbourn, 20, of Pineville, La., was identified as the driver, and deputies noted that her passenger, Lampkin, appeared heavily “dazed” and his reaction time seemed slow. The driver said Lampkin had requested a ride to Lima, Ohio, to see a family member.
Deputies observed an odor of marijuana in the vehicle. Kilbourn was separated from her passenger, and she told deputies that the pair had smoked marijuana while traveling through Kentucky. She also told deputies that she believed that Lampkin had a firearm on his person.
While speaking with Lampkin, deputies asked him where the firearm was and he replied, “Under the seat.” Underneath the passenger seat, deputies were able to recover a 9 mm Glock 43 with a round in the chamber and a magazine containing seven rounds.
Also in the vehicle, deputies recovered several marijuana blunts, a marijuana grinder and a glass pipe.
Kilbourn was issued a summons for possession of marijuana and was released.
Lampkin was placed under arrest and lodged in the Logan County Jail.
