The odds of two-time defending champion Grant Lotts winning the Logan County Spelling Bee were anything but unpropitious.

So it was fitting that foursyllable word was the one that would send the Bellefontaine Middle School eighth-grader into the final round in which he cruised like a caravel to his third consecutive title with the spelling of that word for a highlymaneuverable sailing ship used by the Spanish and Portuguese in their exploration of the Atlantic Ocean.
“It’s been a long journey since September,” the 13-year-old said of the past few months, during which he would study one to two hours a night with his mother, Tina Lotts, in preparation for the eighth grade class spelling bee, the BMS schoolwide bee and the Logan County title. “We would study one to two hours every night for four months.”
