CLAYTON — Led by the pitching of Jenni Kaffenbarger, a brick wall of an infield defense and some timely hitting, Indian Lake’s softball team cruised past Deer Park in Monday’s Division III district championship game.
Kaffenbarger threw a no-hitter and the Lakers rolled up 11 hits for an 11-1 five-inning victory at Northmont High School.
“I got a lot of help from my team,” said Kaffenbarger, who struck out three and walked one. “I have a great defense behind me. As a pitcher, it is great to know you have that kind of a defense to rely on.”
The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was pushed back two days because of wet and stormy weather.
The Lakers (15-7) now just have one day to prepare for their regional semifinal matchup against Williamsburg, which is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wright State University. Williamsburg won the Division IV state title a year ago before moving up a division this season.
“I think the girls will be ready,” said Indian Lake head coach Skip Oliver. “They just had a week off, so they got a lot of rest. At this point, they just want to play.”
Indian Lake’s softball team gathers with its district championship trophy after beating Deer Park 11-1 on Monday at Northmont High School in Clayton.
Indian Lake has now won two district titles in three years.
“I am really proud of the girls,” said Oliver. “This is only the second time in school history we have been in the final 16. The girls should be very proud of what they have accomplished.”
