Indian Lake and Bellefontaine’s wrestling teams had a local battle at the Kevin Cleveland Memorial tournament Saturday at Dublin Scioto High School. The Lakers rallied in the finals to take second place, while the Chieftains finished third.
Worthington Kilbourne won the 10-team tournament with 197.5 points. Indian Lake edged Bellefontaine 166-162 to take runner-up honors and Groveport Madison came in fourth with 151 points.
“We had a decent day overall, but we felt we dropped some close bouts that could have pushed us into first,” said IL head coach Ryan Dickson. “We feel we’re headed into he right direction as we hit the midpoint of our season.”
“We saw a lot of good things from our guys this weekend,” said BHS head coach Aaron LaBatt. “We definitely took a step forward and saw a lot of our guys gain confidence. We had eight of 11 guys place and with a big week coming up this was the type of performance we needed.”
Indian Lake was sparked by senior Kurt Crockett, who won the 138-pound weight class with four pins. The Lakers also had several wrestlers place second, including Cameron Chamberlain (120), Chance Daisy (145), Connor Dixon (170), Cole Mefford (195) and Steven Major (220).
“Kurt had a solid day an it was nice to see him break through and perform the way we know he is capable of,” said Dickson. “Any time you go to a tournment and have nine of 13 guys place is nice and we believe all our mistakes are repairable. We just have to stay focused on improving.”
