Bellefontaine’s girls swim team ran its streak of Central Buckeye Conference championships to six on Saturday by taking first at the league meet.
The Chiefs expected a strong push from Kenton Ridge and that is what happened.
Bellefontaine tallied 261 points, while the Cougars had 229. Indian Lake had 140 to finish third overall and first among Mad River division schools. Ben Logan had 102 points to finish sixth overall and third in the MR division.
“Team was everything for this group at CBC,” said BHS head coach Sharon Lewis. “These girls supported and pushed one another while doing their job to earn every point possible. Every athlete on this team wanted to swim whatever would be best for the group, was willing to mix up relays to score more points and found ways to encourage each other bringing energy to the meet despite the lack of spectators. I am proud of these athletes and love their passion for this sport and their team.”
Earning first-team all-conference honors for the Lady Chiefs were the 200 medley relay team of Sarah Fulmer, Sarah Starkey, Abby Kite and Joslyn Robinson (2:00.50), Morgan Henry in the 100 freestyle (PR of 55.55) and the 100 backstroke and Sarah Starkey in the 500 freestyle.
Finishing with second-team all-conference honors for the BHS girls were Sarah Starkey in the 200 freestyle, Sarah Fulmer in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Kite in the 100 butterfly, Joslyn Robinson in the 200 individual medley, the 200 freestyle relay of Sarah Fulmer, Kite, Sarah Starkey and Henry and the 400 freestyle relay of Joslyn Robinson, Olivia Ullom, Henry and Samantha Starkey.
Also for BHS, Kite was fourth in the 50 freestyle, Joslyn Robinson was seventh in the 100 breaststroke, Samantha Starkey was fourth in the 500 freestyle, Ullom took sixth in the 200 IM and fifth in the 100 breaststroke and Gabby Stolly finished ninth in the 50 freestyle and 13th in the 100 butterfly.
Indian Lake’s girls team was led by third-place (CBC honorable mention) finishes by the 200 medley relay of Ella Wagner, Liza Shutway, Annie Braig and Ashlyn Shaner and the 400 freestyle relay of Wagner, Lily Jenkins, Braig and Shaner.
Also for the Lakers, Shaner placed fourth in the 200 freestyle and fifth in the 500 freestyle setting new school records in both events, Wagner was fifth in the 100 backstroke and Braig finished sixth in the 100 butterfly.
BOYS MEET
Benjamin Logan’s boys team led the area representatives at the CBC meet with a second-place finish with 202 points.
Kenton Ridge won the meet with 242.
The divisions are not split on the boys side. Indian Lake took third overall with 177 and Bellefontaine was fourth with 134.
Leading the Lakers with second-place finishes were Ryan Braig in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, the 200 freestyle relay team of Dustin Franks, Lane McPherson, Reid Vance and Braig and the same group in the 400 freestyle relay.
Taking third for the Lakers were Brant Parsell in the 200 freestyle and the 200 medley relay team of Vance, McPherson, Jacob Huhn and Parsell.
Bellefontaine was led by fourth-place efforts from the 200 medley relay team of John Fulmer, Aidan Mifsud, Elijah Merrin and David Moody and the 400 freestyle relay of Blake McDonald, David Moody, Mifsud and Lucas Harrington.
In addition, the 200 freestyle relay team of McDonald, Fulmer, Merrin and Harrington took fifth, McDonald was sixth in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 100 backstroke, Harrington finished fifth in the 100 butterfly and seventh in the 50 freestyle, Moody finished eighth in the 200 freestyle and 12th in the 100 freestyle, Merrin was 10th in the 200 freestyle and 13th in the 50 freestyle and Fulmer was 11th in the 100 backstroke.
