Judge Kevin P. Braig of the Logan County Court of Common Pleas sentenced Kandale Harrison on Tuesday to 15 to 20 1/2 years in prison, along with sentencing two other defendants to prison terms.
Harrison, 45, was convicted on first-degree aggravated possession of drugs with major drug offender and gun specifications and his conviction on a third-degree failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer charge.
In November of 2020, Harrison led Logan County and Champaign County law enforcement officers on a high speed chase through West Liberty.
During the chase, the defendant discarded two bags containing over 400 grams of methamphetamine and a firearm from the vehicle.
Under Ohio law, a defendant in possession of more than 100 times the bulk amount of an illegal drug can be categorized as a major drug offender. Such categorization required the Court to impose the mandatory maximum 11 years sentence on the first-degree aggravated possession of drugs charge.
Under the Reagan-Tokes law, the Ohio Department of Agriculture could increase Harrison’s time in prison on the charge to 15 1/2 years if Harrison engages in bad conduct while in prison.
Also on Tuesday, Judge Braig sentenced John P. Holycross, 40, to three years in prison on a probation violation.
Holycross had been convicted of two counts of burglary, felonies of the third degree. In January of 2020, the Court put Holycross on five years of probation and ordered he have no contact with a female victim of his burglaries.
However, Holycross was unable to comply with the no contact order. This was Holycross’ third admission to a violation of the no contact order.
Kiana Oppy, 19, also was sentenced by Judge Braig to 3 to 4 1/2 years in prison on her conviction on the charge of complicity to aggravated robbery, a felony of the first degree.
The conviction stemmed from her role in driving several teen-aged boys to the Hyland Hills Shopping Plaza to perpetrate a robbery of an individual, Joseph Ropp. During the robbery, one of the boys shot Ropp twice.
