John E. Subler, 87, of Versailles, passed away at 9:36 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2018, at his residence.
He was born July 19, 1930, in Yorkshire to the late Felix E. and Bertha D. Grilliot Subler. Healso was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Ann Berger, Alverda Bohman, Rita Hannan, Eileen Batty and Patricia Dabbelt; and brothers, Carl Subler, Kenneth Subler, Basil Subler and Marion Goffena.
John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Isabella Sege Subler whom he married Sept. 25, 1954; children, Christine (Jeff) Huber of Sidney, formerly of Bellefontaine, and Tim (Cindy) Subler, Dan Subler and Doug (Cheryl) Subler, all of Versailles; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Doris Monnin of Versailles; sisters-in-law, Annabel Subler of Versailles, Vera (Larry) Thaman of Botkins and Krista Subler-Boellke; and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was a combat veteran of the Korean War, serving as sergeant first class in the U.S. Army. He was a farmer and retired from Subler Transfer in Versailles. John was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles, Knights of Columbus St. Denis Council, Versailles V.F.W. and Darke County Farm Bureau.
A Mass of Christian Burial begins at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, at St. Denis Catholic Church, 14 E. Wood St., Versailles, with the Rev. Fr. Jim Simons celebrant. Burial follows in St. Valbert Cemetery in Versailles with full military honors conducted by the Versailles Veterans Honor Guard.
Callingis from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home, 653 Hickey Ave., Versailles.
