James P. Coe, 94, of Marysville, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 15, 2016, at Milcrest Nursing Center in Marysville.
He was retired from the Scotts Company after 30 years and was a member of the Scotts’ 20-Year Club. For many years through his life he farmed and was a former member of the Farm Bureau. A man of faith, he has been a part of a family of Christians who have been gathering together since 1971. In his free time in his later years, he volunteered for the Memorial Hospital Mobile Meals program and was a member of Toastmasters. He started grade school in Peoria and was the salutatorian of the 1941 Rosedale High School graduating class.
Jim enlisted with the 235th Combat Engineers, 13th Army Airborne, and served honorably as a demolitions expert in the Philippines during WWII.
He was on the ship Marine Tiger headed for Japan, on Aug. 15, 1945, when the Potsdam Declaration was accepted by the Japanese.
The last to survive of a family of 10 children, James was born Sept.10, 1922, in Union County to the late James Franklin “Frank” and Carrie Leach Bowers Coe. He married the former Ruth L. Andrews on June 2, 1948, in Union Chapel. She preceded him in death April 5, 2010.
He is survived by his children, Paul M. (Judy) Coe of Lynn, Ind., Carl R. Coe and Dorothy L. (Frank) Lewis, both of Marysville, Dave E. (Laura) Coe of Seville, James S. (Rachel) Coe of Jackson Center and Diana R. Hatton of Appleton, Wis.; 18 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at the Ingram Funeral Home, 975 N. Maple St., Marysville, where services are at 10:30 am Saturday, Nov. 19, with Irving Ross and Greg Swenson officiating. Burial follows at Oakdale Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Union County Honor Guard.
