SERNA |
A day after his case was transferred out of juvenile court, Ely Serna, 17, was charged as an adult for a Jan. 20 shooting at West Liberty-Salem High School.
A Champaign County grand jury handed up an indictment Tuesday accusing the teen of two counts of attempted murder; three counts of felonious assault; six counts of improperly discharging a firearm in a school; and single counts of inducing panic and illegal conveyance of a firearm into a school.
Each of the attempted murder and felonious assault counts specify a gun was used in the commission of the crime.
He will be arraigned at 2:30 p.m. Thursday before Champaign County Common Pleas Judge Nick A. Selvaggio.
Authorities claim the high school junior took a partially disassembled 12-gauge shotgun to the school Jan. 20 and shot Logan Cole twice when the then 16-year-old schoolmate found the shooter assembling the weapon in a restroom.
Serna also allegedly exited the restroom and fired more shots and struck another student.
Logan was seriously injured and continues his recovery. The other student did not sustain serious injuries.
