Indian Lake’s Nate Kaffenbarger will continue his baseball career at the collegiate level after recently deciding on Defiance College.
A utility player that has contributed in a variety of ways on the diamond for the Lakers, Kaffenbarger said he clicked well with the coaching staff at Defiance.
Defiance competes at the NCAA Division III level.
“Defiance has the competitive atmosphere that I was looking for,” he said.
A knee injury wiped out Kaffenbarger’s junior season. However, as a sophomore he hit .297 with three doubles and eight RBI to earn special mention all-Central Buckeye Conference honors.
He also went 4-2 on the mound with a 2.06 ERA. He is expected to return to the Lakers’ pitching rotation in the spring.
“Nate is a person that puts others’ needs in front of his own,” said Indian Lake head coach Ryan Lillard. “Myself and coach (Dave) Snapp, we’ve used him in a multitude of different places. He shows very good leadership, he works hard, he’s vey coachable and he’ll do whatever is necessary to make his team better.”
Defiance went 18-22 overall and 11-16 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference last season.
