Sunday, May 22, the Indian Lake High School and its community watched as 111 seniors accepted their diplomas. The commencement ceremony took place at Laker Stadium before a supportive crowd of family and friends.
“From the first day of elementary school we pretty much knew we were all spoiled,” Cheyenne Hill, senior class president, said in her remarks. She concluded, “Despite this, we had our good moments … and in those classrooms we found ourselves.
“Every single person around us has helped us achieve this goal. Do not forget who you are and where you came from.”
Following a musical number from the senior class members and an acknowledgement of awards to the top 10 students, which included salutatorian Allison Culp and six valedictorians: Dylan Carter, Shania Fruchey, Trenton Fulkerson, Cheyenne Hill, Luke Jackson and Easton Klauer.
Rounding out the top 10 for the ILHS Class of 2022 are: Kendall Cotterman, Kaleb Hurley and KaLynn Miller.
Chelsea LaRiva, senior class vice president, then introduced the guest speaker, Jeremy Miller, ILHS graduate, 1999. He shared the five principles he falls back on:
• You don’t have as much time as you think, so “don’t waste a minute on things that don’t matter.”
• “You can’t always control what happens, but you can control how you react.”
• “Get comfortable being uncomfortable.”
• “Failure is not a negative thing.”
• Find your gift. “There are no right or wrong gifts as long as you use it to make your world better.”
“It won’t always be easy, but there is a way through,” Miller said in closing. “Be an active participant; don’t let life come to you.”
Miller attended The Ohio State University, where he played football and was a member of the 2002 BCS National Championship team. Following college, he completed the basic peace officer academy at the Ohio State Highway Patrol while a working for the Dublin Police Department. He’s been with the DPD for 19 years. Miller and his wife, Katie, have three sons.
