Voters could decide issue in November
Ohio voters might get to weigh in on the state’s addiction problem in November if a statewide advocacy group gets enough signatures to list its issue on the ballot.
The Neighborhood Safety, Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Amendment is a ballot issue that has already cleared the offices of the Ohio Attorney General and Secretary of State and is moving into its signature-collection phase, Amanda Hoyt, a spokesperson for the issue said.
It is aimed at diverting low-level drug offenders away from prison and reinvesting the money saved in community rehabilitation programs and victims services.
“This is a ballot initiative to reform our criminal justice system, making the state healthier and safer,” Hoyt said. “The measure will reduce the number of people in state prison for low level nonviolent crimes and put money to better use by redirecting it to drug treatment and victim services.”
