West Liberty-Salem’s softball team got off to a good start, but could not keep it going in a 9-7 loss to visiting Greenon in a Division III sectional softball opener Monday.
The fourth-seeded Tigers grabbed a 4-0 lead after two innings, but 19th-seeded Greenon battled back to pull off the upset.
The Knights hit two home runs in the fourth inning and put four runs on the scoreboard to knot the score at 4-4.
The Tigers regained the lead at 6-4 with a pair of runs in the fifth inning.
However, Greenon answered with a five-run outburst in the top of the sixth to lead 9-6.
The Tigers were able to muster one run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Knights hung on for the win.
WL-Salem collected 12 hits. Maddie Hutton was 3-4 with a double and an RBI, Bailey Poppe went 2-4 with a double, Whitney Strapp had a double and an RBI and Macie
Campbell and Aubrey Williams each added an RBI.
Greenon pounded out 14 hits on the day.
WL-Salem finishes its season with a record of 14-12.
Greenon, now 4-15, advances to play at seventh-seeded Versailles on Wednesday in the sectional semifinals.

Raiders oust Graham
Benjamin Logan’s softball team slugged out a 13-8 victory in a Central Buckeye Conference softball game Monday.
The Raiders are now 18-8 overall and 9-6 in the CBC. Graham falls to 13-12, 4-10.
Ben Logan hammered out 13 hits on the day.
Rhea Harner went 4-5 with a triple and three RBI and Jillian Plikerd went 2-4 with a home run and five RBI to spark the Raiders.
Brooks Myers went 2-4 with a double and two RBI, Jenn Naragon was 2-3 with one RBI and Georgia Bates hit a home run to aid the Ben Logan hitting attack.
Kyah Moore earned the win in the pitching circle for the Raiders.
Ben Logan returns to action today at home against Kenton Ridge.
