Gary E. Oakes Sr., 67, of Dunkirk, passed away at 11:14 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born in Philipsburg, Mont., on Feb. 14, 1951, to the late Gregory and Verlma Tesch.
On Dec. 31, 1980, Gary married the former Meryl Eleanor Rosander, and she preceded him in death June 3, 2017. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Belle Duran, and brother, Bernie Oakes.
Gary is survived by his three sons, Joseph (Tara) Oakes, Richard (Amy) Oakes and Gary (Hollie) Oakes; 13 grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren; two brothers, Gene (Michelle) Oakes and David Oakes; an “adopted son,” Travis (Ashley) Robinson; and many nieces and nephews.
Gary had worked for many years in Montana as a miner. After moving to Ohio, he began working as a tow truck driver. Gary loved sports. He loved watching the Michigan Wolverines, Cleveland Browns, and most especially his boys when they played high school and semi-pro football. He was also a member of the Elks, and enjoyed working with wood and leather, drawing, and fishing.
Per Gary’s request, his body was cremated and no public services will be observed.
