MARYSVILLE — A 39-year-old homeless man was found dead this week in a creek near a Marysville city park, but authorities do not suspect foul play.
The heavily tattooed body, which was later identified as that of William E. Wampler, was spotted by a bicyclist on the Jim Simmons Trail shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday. It was located tangled in fallen trees about 10 feet in the water between Mill Valley South and Mill Creek parks.
A bicycle officer with the Marysville Police Department was nearby and responded immediately.
The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office used fingerprints to identify the man, who is believed to have been in the water nearly a week. There was no evidence of physical trauma or other signs of foul play, Police Chief Floyd Golden reported.
He was wearing only a pair of shorts with only a commemorative coin in his pocket. He is believed to be homeless, has a prior criminal history and has few close relatives in the area.
Results of toxicology tests are pending.
