Brandon T. Bailey, 37, at large, was charged Thursday with having weapons under disability.
An officer of the Bellefontaine Police on patrol observed Bailey park a pickup truck in the fire lane of Walmart, 2281 S. Main St., at 4:35 p.m. and walk into the store.
The officer had followed the pickup from the west side of the city and waited for Bailey to return.
Upon contact with the officer, Bailey was unable to produce a valid driver’s license and a check of databased in Ohio, Alabama and North Dakota did not reveal current driving privileges. However, records showed he was convicted of a felony in North Dakota that involved a firearm.
When asked about any guns in the pickup, Bailey admitted there was a handgun in a safe with a loaded magazine that belonged to his ex-girlfriend. She was to remove the handgun and safe but had not yet done so, he told officers. He claimed he could not gain access to the safe’s contents
The safe was located in the pickup and removed. Once officers obtained a search warrant, it was opened and a loaded handgun, four additional loaded magazines and the defendant’s birth certificate were found and seized. Two cellular phones also were collected by officers.
Bailey was transported to the Logan County Jail.
