Despite being one of the team’s most productive players over the last couple of years, Nicole Fawcett will not represent the U.S. national squad at the upcoming Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The former Benjamin Logan and Penn State star helped Team USA to three wins at the FIVB World Grand Prix last weekend in Hong Kong, China. She had a team-high 15 kills in the win over Germany.
However, Fawcett was informed earlier this week by head coach Karch Kiraly that she will no longer be with the team.
After finishing her Penn State career in 2008, Fawcett has been a standout internationally and has also been a big part of the U.S. national team’s success.
She was selected MVP of the Korean League last year and was named the MVP and best opposite side hitter at the 2016 NORCECA Olympic Qualifier. She led the U.S. team to a gold medal in that event.
Fawcett was named the Gatorade Ohio player of the year as a senior at Ben Logan.
At Penn State, Fawcett was a four-time All-American. She was named the nation’s top freshman in her first year and was selected as the national player of the year as a senior. She helped the Nittany Lions to a pair of national championships during her college career.
She has played with several professional teams on the international level. In 2013, she set a single-match world record for most points with 55 for Seongnam KEC Hi-pass in South Korea’s V-League.
