Nancy Harmon — “Nurse Nancy” to those that know her and love her — has spent the majority of her career spreading a message of early detection.
And now that the spotlight has been turned on her own personal battle with cancer, she can’t help but hammer home the lesson she has been trying to instill in the community.
“All my life, I’ve been preaching about these screenings and how important they are,” she said at the conclusion of the fifth annual Doors of EnCOURAGEment auction on Tuesday evening. “Early detection is what made it possible for me to fight this. And if you know me, you know I’ll fight like hell.”
She went recently for her five-year colonoscopy and after further testing was diagnosed with cancer of the colon that has also spread to her liver. She said she will begin a rigorous chemotherapy treatment May 4, that includes new methods of treatment.
“If there’s any type of research, I’ve signed up for it and I’m going to fight this,” Mrs. Harmon said.
