Charles R. Neff, 33, of 185 Rush St., Rushsylvania, was charged Sunday with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
He also was cited for no driver’s license and a stop sign violation.
Around 11:55 p.m., an officer of the Bellefontaine Police Department observed a van southbound on Lawrence Street without any illumination on its rear license plate. He followed the van and watched as its operator slowed, but did not stop for stop sign at Garfield Avenue.
A stop was initiated in the 400 block of Garfield and the officer noticed multiple open cans of beer upon approaching the driver. He also noted an odor of alcohol while talking with Neff and reported the driver’s speech was slurred. Field sobriety tests indicated he was impaired by alcohol. His breathalyzer sample was 0.161.
