Shane M. Simpson, 32, of 430 N. Detroit St., Bellefontaine, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs related to a hit-skip crash Tuesday morning.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office report he was operating an eastbound car about 11:35 a.m. in the area of 4268 County Road 10 when he traveled off the right side of the road and struck a mailbox, trash cans and a traffic sign and then fled the scene.
At the scene of the crash, deputies report his vehicle license plate and vehicle parts were left behind, along with a trail of vehicle fluid.
Deputies and an officer of the Bellefontaine Police Department responded to Simpson’s address after identifying the registered vehicle owner as his wife. The car was located in the driveway of the residence and it had heavy front end damage.
While speaking with Simpson, deputies observed that he was intoxicated, and he at first would not admit to driving the vehicle. Then he claimed that he had been in an accident after he got off work at 11 a.m., but he had not been intoxicated at that time. He said he drank alcohol after he arrived at home and before deputies arrived.
He was placed under arrest and transported to the Logan County Jail, where field sobriety tests were conducted. He also submitted to a breath test, with a result of 0.148 blood alcohol content.
The defendant also was cited for driving under suspension, failure to control and hit-skip.
