Donald Erwin Day, 94, formerly of Upper Arlington, and recently of Friendship Village of Dublin, passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2018.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frances Leech and Jesse Erwin Day; sister, Cora Elizabeth Day; and wife of 54 years, Carol Bradford Day.
Don graduated from Columbus North High School and Ohio State University with degrees in zoology and civil engineering. He served during World War II in the U.S. Army as a medical laboratory technician with the 87th Field Hospital in Okinawa. He worked briefly for the United States Geological Survey. For the Ohio Department of Health, he headed up the Accident Prevention Bureau and was Engineer in Charge of Solid Waste. He was then named Chief of Ohio EPA’s Office of Land Pollution.
As a professional engineer and sanitary engineer, (registration No. 002), he was a member of several professional engineering and environmental organizations. Following retirement, he served as a consultant for two engineering firms. Don was a long-time member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he also served as an elder.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Deborah Day of Bellefontaine; daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Keith Toresdahl of Denver, Colo.; grandchildren, Jonathan (Danielle Cash)Day , Cora (Jess Gabriel) Day, Robert (Krissy) Day and Brian (Brittney) Toresdahl; great-grandchildren, Xander, Tyler, Sadie, Grace, Leo and Ike; and sister-in-law, Barbara Bradford.
A memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2070 Ridgecliff Road. Columbus, OH 43221, where family will receive friends starting at 1:30 p.m.
A private graveside service was already held at Green Lawn Cemetery through arrangements by Schoedinger Northwest Chapel.
