West Liberty Village Council is prepared not only just to build a police department, but also to raze the existing the structure at 112 E. Columbus St.
Only one problem: Council has yet to find a suitable alternative location.
In the meantime, it’s increasingly likely the West Liberty Police Department will be working out of the community room, and potentially storing evidence with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office.
During its regular meeting Monday, council voted to allocate $9,600 toward having blueprints drawn for a new department. Any grant applications the village may apply for will require, or will be bolstered by building plans that are in process or completed.
Police Chief Shane Oelker has been told his department needs to vacate that building by May 1, because if the village is still using the existing police department building after May 1, the village’s insurance deductible increases by $5,000 because of how unsafe the building is.
