Area fire departments continued their series of prescribed burns around Logan County on Tuesday, with a controlled fire along a 3.9-acre tract of land along the Simon Kenton Rail Trail in Liberty Township, near County Road 30.

Tuesday’s controlled burn follows a similar undertaking Saturday at Bellefontaine Middle School.
The controlled fires are intended to reduce the threat of wildfire, as well as provide for training opportunities for firefighters.
Despite having received over an inch of snowfall Sunday, grounds were dried out enough by Tuesday to conduct the controlled burn, which also was intended to help maintain remnants of native prairie tall grasses along the 170-plus-year-old railroad corridor.
Four more controlled burns are being planned for the days and weeks ahead, beginning with a controlled burn Friday at the Myeerah Nature Preserve.
