Deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office cautions residents to exercise extreme caution when responding to solicitations for computer services, or other e-mail requests for money or personal information.
Katurah Darling, 77, of Belle Center, reported about 2 p.m. Wednesday that on July 26 that she responded to a “pop-up” message on her computer notifying her of a supposed virus on her computer and directing her to call a phone number to fix it.
According to an incident report, she contacted the phone number and spoke with a man with an “Indian accent,” who said her computer could be fixed for a total cost of $422.14 and instructed her to provide him her bank routing number, and to send the money.
Ms. Darling said she complied, assuming her computer would be fixed. She told deputies she gave the suspect access to her computer and all its contents.
She reported that the computer has since been “wiped clean,” and her bank did replace her funds and changed her accounts.
No suspect information is immediately available.
